The South African Astronomical Observatory (sometimes called SAAO) is based in a city called Cape Town in South Africa, but the main telescopes are in the African wilderness 15 kilometres from the nearest town. South Africa is a fantastic country for astronomy as there isn’t a ‘cloudy season’, so astronomers there can enjoy the starry night sky all year round! To make the most of their luck, astronomers at SAAO study the sky in visible light and a type of invisible light called infrared.
